I would like to upgrade my 2.1GB hard disk but understand that, because my system is four years old, I will be limited to a size of 8GB. I would obviously like to take advantage of the 40GB-plus capacities now on offer; is there any way round this limitation?
Yes there is, but it will make your upgrade a bit more expensive. You can buy a SCSI hard disk, for which you will also need to buy a SCSI adapter card, or you can buy a UDMA 100 adapter card to use with your new IDE hard disk. In both cases it will be simpler to keep your existing hard disk as the boot (C) drive, so you'll need to ensure that your PC has a spare drive bay as well as a spare PCI bus slot. The separate adapters and the drivers they will require will circumvent your PC's 8GB Bios limitation, as well as enabling greater performance than you would achieve from a drive connected to your existing hard disk controller.
